Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Secure French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now claimed the season-opening cup on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time leveler followed by a perfect penalty shootout to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown between the French league winners and the Coupe de France winners after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

Yet, Marseille struck two times late to seize a shock advantage. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a breathtaking twist of fortune, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial leveler in the dying moments to force the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then stood as the key figure, saving crucial attempts from O'Riley and Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners PSG, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now won this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
